A Fool Loses Everything ~ Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor

Topic: Better Things to Come [Monday February 27, 2017]

“And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name.” (1 Sam 25:5)

Nabal means a fool. Nabal grew up, became rich, and married a wife named Abigail.Abigail means, ‘joy of the father’. David had been anointed king but was still on his way to the throne. Who in Israel didn’t know David would be the next king?

David was running for his life with his men and somehow found himself within Nabal’s property. He and his men were good people, so they guarded Nabal’s property and did no harm to anything belonging to him. Before long, they became hungry and David sent men to ask Nabal for some food but Nabal chased them away, asking “Who is David?” Only a person slow in understanding would chase away a future king.

When David received Nabal’s response, he got up with his men, determined to destroy all that Nabal had. But Abigail heard of David’s plan and intervened. The Bible describes Abigail as a woman of ‘good understanding’. A man slow in understanding wanted to bring destruction to himself and his entire household but a woman of good understanding saved the day. She saved her husband from destruction, and David from taking revenge and shedding blood.

Ten days after Abigail intervened, Nabal died, and David ended up marrying his wife. At the end of the day, all that Nabal had went to David. That is what happens to a person that is slow of understanding. When a man is slow to understanding spiritual things, whatever God gives him leaves him.

I pray that God will make you an Abigail. May all that you do be inspired by understanding. May you not give out your child to a fool for wife.

WORDS OF WISDOM: My understanding will make me outstanding.

PRAYER/CONFESSION: LORD, give me a heart that understands what you are saying in every season.
