Topic: Do Not Look Unto Aaron
Read: Exodus 32:1-10
Exodus 32:1-10 And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.
And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden earrings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.
And all the people brake off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.
And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, To morrow is a feast to the LORD.
And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.
And the LORD said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves:
They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:
Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them: and I will make of thee a great nation.
MEMORISE:
And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf (Exodus 32:4)
EXPOSITION
The Israelites would eventually go through a very long journey (a journey that shouldn’t have gone beyond 40 days but that would turn to 40-year journey) to possess the land of Canaan. God gave them Moses to lead them on the journey, to be accompanied by his brother Aaron (a man with eloquent tongue). God purposefully allowed Aaron to become his mouthpiece.
The fact of God’s love and care for them, manifested in how He delivered them from Egypt, should have been enough for Aaron to stand rightly on his feet to encourage the people at a time they walked up to him. He was to make them understand the situation as seeing God in action. But what they got from him led them against God who had been leading them all the way. While Moses was away to speak with God on the mountain, the Israelites began to wonder just where he could have gone. It didn’t take them long to call for a new leader, at least for a season. As they gathered around Aaron to request his help, he succeeded in making a golden calf from the ornaments God had commanded them to do away with. This they did in violating the first commandment. Aaron really misfired!
To some effects, the same situations still abound around us, today. Going through churches, there are some believers whose faith is built on the presence of their leader, and not God. No wonder they are easily misled against God’s purpose. They cannot stand on their feet to seek the true God (2 Chro. 15:2). They run from one mountain to the other looking for miracles that are fabricated (cf. Matt. 24:23-27).
Who are you, and how do you hold unto God? Do you still seek intermediaries between you and God? It is high time you changed and held to Him firmly. He will not forsake you. He cares for you.
PRAYER POINTS
1. Ask God for forgiveness at those points you have looked away from God to man, regardless of the status or power.
2. Pray for the grace to remain focused on Jesus everywhere and every time.
3. O Lord, rebuke the spirit of compromise among our leaders, secular and spiritual, so that they would not be leading people away from God’s holiness.
