Text: Numbers 20:14-21 (KJV)
Key Verse: “And Edom said unto him, Thou shalt not pass by me, lest I come out against thee with the sword” (Numbers 20:18).
MESSAGE:
International trips are usually backed up with visa requirements. There is no guarantee for automatic entry unless visa is obtained so as to screen those who come in and go out. Unfortunately, there are genuine and sincere applicants whose applications are rejected on the basis of lack of clarity of intention, insufficient information or prejudice. Denial of visa into another country is an instructive indicator of what will happen to those who aspire to go to heaven, the abode of God.
Today’s passage is an appeal by Moses through his messengers, for Israel to pass through the borders of the Edomites, the descendants of Esau. The king of Edom refused and threatened Israel not to attempt it, else it would be to their peril.
The refusal of the Edomites to Israel’s request could be seen as the demonstration of cruelty, an unforgiving spirit and inhospitality. The Edomites did not trust Israel. Christians should learn to forgive and forget past offences and injuries. At the same time, there is the need to watch and pray before accepting an offer.
Moses tried to negotiate with the king of Edom to allow them passage but the Edomites refused. Israel had the option of turning it into an open warfare and conflict to force their way through, but the way of peace was their choice. This is a good example of godly leadership that believers must emulate.
Thought For The Day: It is wisdom to follow peace with all men and receive God’s favour.
