TOPIC: Lest We Forget

TEXT: Numbers 9:1-4

1 And the LORD spake unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying,

2 Let the children of Israel also keep the passover at his appointed season.

3 In the fourteenth day of this month, at even, ye shall keep it in his appointed season: according to all the rites of it, and according to all the ceremonies thereof, shall ye keep it.

4 And Moses spake unto the children of Israel, that they should keep the passover.

KEY VERSE: “Let the children of Israel also keep the passover at his appointed season.” – (Numbers 9:2)

MESSAGE:

The phrase “lest we forget” initially featured in a Christian poem written in 1897 by an English writer, Rudyard Kipling. In the poem titled “Recessional”, Kipling repeatedly warned of the danger of not remembering God as the true Source of a nation’s victory in battles. It simply re-echoes God’s charge to His people in Deuteronomy 4:9: “Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons”.

One of the festivals marked by the Jews is the Passover. This festival is a remembrance of that night before their departure, when the destroying angel slew the firstborn of the Egyptians and passed over the houses of the Hebrews because they were marked with the blood of the paschal lamb.

One year after leaving Egypt, as Israel journeyed in the wilderness, Moses at God’s instruction, reminded them to observe the Passover on the 14th day of their first month, the killing of the paschal lamb, the eating of the unleavened bread for seven days and other details. Our Lord Jesus Christ observed the feast and showed that it was not only commemorative of Israel’s deliverance but a pointer to the ultimate salvation for which He would serve as the Paschal Lamb. The Bible makes it clear that “Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us…” (1 Corinthians 5:7). He therefore substituted the Passover with the Lord’s Supper to be marked regularly by Christians in remembrance of Him.

Today, people are obsessed with marking all kinds of anniversaries. As a believer, your “lest-we-forget” is Christ’s redemptive sacrifice and the salvation it wrought in you. Not accepting Him makes one to remain in sin and condemnation.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
If you can’t remember when you met Christ, you have nothing worthwhile to celebrate.
