DCLM Daily Manna – True Lifeguard

Topic: True Lifeguard [Saturday July 22, 2017]

Text: Mark 10:17-27

Key Verse: “And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17).

“Eternal, eternal life, Eternal, eternal life, I want to live eternal life, God save my soul, I want to live eternal life, God save my soul.” The lyrics above used to be a very popular chorus many years ago. It is seldom sang today, because many are not too conscious or may have forgotten there is an eternal life after this present life.

The young rich man in the text, who ran to Jesus in the way, knew better, as he realised that he needed eternal life, though he was very comfortable. It was the missing thing in his life and he sought how to inherit it. He came to the right Person, for Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life; no one can get to the Father (Eternal life) except by Him. Jesus is the only Lifeguard to eternal life.

A lifeguard is a beach or pool attendant, trained in rescue operations. His job is to watch over swimmers at a beach or swimming pool and save those in danger or drowning. To the individual struggling strenuously against life’s stormy waters of sin, sickness and Satan, Christ is the only Lifeguard. His suffering and death on Calvary’s Cross is the miraculous rescue for all troubled souls.

All are sinners by birth, choice and practice. The nature of sin is native to every human that descended from Adam. Sin leads the sinner away from eternal life, far away from God. Perhaps, you trust in your religious zeal, almsgiving, fasting and praying and moral uprightness. Yours is false confidence! Like the rich young man, depending on your personal works of righteousness cannot save.

It is like attempting to roll your car merrily across a furious river on a bridge suspended on a spider’s webs. A terrible disaster is inevitable. You stand at a crossroads today. You must receive Christ’s offer of rescue (free pardon) and be saved, or refuse Him and be lost into a dreadful eternity.

Thought for the day: No gift is more needed by the drowning world than the Lifeguard, the Saviour.
