That the Redeemed Christian Church of God has witnessed many wonders since its little beginning sixty-five years ago underscores the potency of praise to our mighty God.
Albeit, the story of the Church is well known globally, at least in 192 nations that host branches of the Church, there were reverberating halleluyah moments in the early years of the church. We thank God who spared the lives of the surviving elders from the generation of 1950’s and 1960’s. Some of them shared their reminiscences.
In Ilaro parish, two members of RCCG fell into a very deep well, a reservoir of volumes of water. The Parish Pastor, Pastor Gabriel Ayodeji (now know as Elder Akingun) cried to God for mercy. While those with modest faith had given them up as dead, a strong rope was thrown into the well and the two members climbed out.
Sometimes in 1992, a wedding ceremony was in the last stages, bride and bridegroom were at the registry to sign the register and as the bridegroom wanted to sign, he had a distant voice calling him, he answered, collapsed and died. Pastor Aderibigbe (now retired AGO), was the Lagos State Pastor at the time. He instructed the congregation to be praising God. Mama Aderibigbe who was at the ceremony said one of the Pastors told the congregation that the bridegroom requested for “Chineke Ndima o” song. Suddenly, the bridegroom woke up and danced with the bride to the auditorium.
The story of the first auditorium of the headquarters parish at 9b Willoughby Street was supernatural. The mainland Town Council had come to give notice that it would be demolished within one day because the Church building failed to give 100meters setback from the drainage channel. The founder, Rev. Josaiah Akindayomi asked the ministers and the workers present to shout ‘Halleluyah Amen’ seven times round the building. The following day, the building had moved back and given the required setback.
RCCG has experience the Lord’s goodness, mercy and miracles since inception in 1952. Rev. Jasaiah Akindayomi was led by the Holy Spirit to start a Christian fellowship: Egbe Ogo Oluwa with seven foundation members who met regularly fro prayers and bible study. Despite being unlettered and coming from idol-worshiping background, Rev. Akindayomi was nonetheless a worthy vessel to establish the Church with a name that was divinely given – and the name has not changed ever since. He led God’s people with obedience while God responded with miracles and testimonies. God’s covenant with the founder and divine guidance are responsible for the success of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Rev. Akindayomi, early enough, had a revelation of his successor and how God would use him. The moment of halleluyah for RCCG was that Sunday in 1973 when the scholar, Enoch Adejare Adeboye walked into RCCG for spiritual solution to a personal problem. Little did he knw that he was walking into a life-changing and career turning point. He literally walked into his destiny. Adeboye, like his predecessor, Akindayomi is very obedient to God’s instructions and His word; he is very humble and loves God with all his heart. From 39 parishes in 1981, God made RCCG flourish and spread to 192 Nations. The birth of model parishes, Holy Ghost Service, Christ the Redeemers Friends International and planting of Churches in Nigeria and several nations are vehicles for growth. The growth has led to the appointment of National Overseer for Nigeria, the Nation Overseer, Pastor Joseph Obayemi was appointed on January 7, 2017.
The General Overseer, RCCG Pastor E.A Adeboye has won seven honours – Honourary degrees, one of the 50 most influential men in the world and two national honours. None of the honours are related to his passion, love and teaching of mathematics. All the honours are related to his genuine salvation and his excellent walk as a Pastor.
