Text: Zechariah 14:12-21
Key Verse: “And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.”(Zechariah 14:12).
God has never hidden His love for Israel. He’s always there for them. Israel has always been marked out for destruction by the enemy nations but the more they tried, the more God’s grace abounded for Israel. Though He allowed Israel to be oppressed by their enemies as punishment for their sin, He would rescue them at the nick of time.
In the passage today, God expresses His determination to avenge for Israel. It was a promise of deliverance from the oppression of the wicked nations round about Jerusalem. He particularly mentioned Egypt. “This shall be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles” (verse 19). Today, believers in Christ are being reminded of the ever-abiding presence of God in their lives and His unfailing power.
Those who may be nursing the fear of being overrun by the wicked, who may be under the threat of the enemy or have begun to review their stance in the Lord must remember that God does not change. He fought for Israel in the past; He still does the same for those who truly trust in His power. Through all generations, He never fails; He never slumbers and He’s never tired of bearing our burdens and hearing our prayer. All we need do is to always cast our cares upon Him.
We must rest on His unfailing promise of timely interventions. Again, the essence of divine intervention is that we might fulfill our calling or serve God without fear and in holiness all the days of our lives. Those who commit themselves to serving God have always obtained and enjoyed special favours.
Thought for the day: God has the capacity to overturn the greatest of all captivities.
