Pastor W. F. Kumuyi

DCLM Daily Manna 29 October 2022 Devotional By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — A Good Name

TOPIC: A Good Name (DCLM Daily Manna 29 October 2022)

TEXT: Proverbs 22:1-6 (KJV)

1 A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.

2 The rich and poor meet together: the Lord is the maker of them all.

3 A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.

4 By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honour, and life.

5 Thorns and snares are in the way of the froward: he that doth keep his soul shall be far from them.

6 Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

KEY VERSE: “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” – (Proverbs 22:1).

MESSAGE:

In the African setting, so much importance is attached to names. It is not uncommon, for instance, that when a son or daughter wants to get married, the parents make a lot of efforts to find out the background of the spouse-to-be. Not few weddings have been called off when it was discovered that the would-be spouse does have a disreputable pedigree.

From the text, the Lord teaches us that a good name ought to be chosen above silver and gold. He says that both the rich and the poor are made by the same God. A wise person sees evil and hides himself while the foolish keeps going and suffers for it. True riches actually come by humility and fear of God. Thorns, snares, and evil are in the ways of the wicked. We are admonished to train our children in the way they should go, so that when they get old, they will not depart from it.

A good name is important. God Himself had at times changed the names of people to confer a good image on them. For instance, Abram became Abraham, Sarai became Sarah and Jacob became Israel. Simon was given a new name, Cephas, which means “a stone”, when he came to Christ, and he went ahead to be a real solid apostle through whom thousands of souls were saved.

The only way a sinner can have a good name with God is to sincerely repent of his sins and surrender his life to Christ. It is then the person becomes a child of God with his name written in the book of life.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
A good name is more desirable than great riches.
