Topic: The Great Barrier To Salvation – Unbelief

Date: Monday, October 26, 2020

Read: Matthew 13:53-58

Matthew 13:53-58  And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.

And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?

Is not this the carpenter’s son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joses, and Simon, and Judas?

And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?

And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and in his own house.

And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.

MEMORISE:

Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them (Mark 6:5)

EXPOSITION

“There are three great enemies against which God’s children should daily pray: Pride, worldliness and unbelief. Of these three, none is greater than unbelief.” (Bishop J.C. Ryle). There is nothing that prevents salvation of souls like unbelief. Their sins, however many, might be forgiven; the Father’s love is ready to receive them; the blood of Christ is ready to cleanse them; the power of the Spirit is ready to renew them. But the great barrier to salvation is unbelief. The severity of unbelief is expressed in Mark 6:6 “And He (Jesus) marveled because of their unbelief.” The Lord always uses strong language when He refers to unbelief among His people, words such as wrath, anger, abhorrence, tempting Him. (Deuteronomy 1:31, 34-35).

Unbelief is hardening our hearts toward God’s voice. Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts (Psalms 95:7-8). It means we are testing and trying God (Psalms 95:9). Unbelief will cause you to be blind to God’s blessings all around you. Unbelief and contempt drove Christ out of the land, as they sent Him out of His own country (Mk. 6:1-5). Faith seems to put the almighty power of God into the hands of men; whereas, unbelief appears to tie up even the hands of the Almighty.

Because of their unbelief – We are not to assume that His power was limited by the belief or unbelief of people; but they were so “prejudiced,” so set against Him, that they were not in a condition to “judge of evidence” and to be convinced.

PRAYER POINTS

1. Lord Jesus, destroy every spirit of unbelief from my heart in Jesus’ name.

2. Lord Jesus, do not allow the spirit of unbelief to drive You out of my heart, in Jesus’ name.

3. Holy Ghost fire, please consume every spirit of unbelief that is hindering Your mighty work in our Churches, today.
