Date: Thursday, November 11, 2021

Read:  Galatians 5:22-25

Galatians 5:22-25  But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,

Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.

MEMORISE:

And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18)

EXPOSITION

Many people have wondered why the receipt of the Holy Spirit has no known formula like what obtains in the mathematics, for example. Would it have been “interesting’ if there were a laid down formula for receiving the Holy Spirit? Wouldn’t people lke Simon in Acts 8 be merchandising and commercialising Him (Holy Spirit), today? A renowned revivalist and Bible expositor, Billy Graham, of blessed memory, once said that there is nowhere in the Bible where a recipe or dogmatic formula is given for receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, the early church would not have had diverse gifts, which all work towards the same goal (1 Cor. 12:11-12).

Being filled with the Spirit of God is a normal Christian life. It is not a demonic or bizarre nature. It is good to be a child of God, but better to be filled with God’s Spirit. Although, receipt of the Holy Spirit affects one’s emotion and feelings spiritually, but cautions must be taken not to take only physical manifestations of speaking in tongues as the total experience of being filled with God’s Spirit. To have the wholesome experience, your life must exhibit the Fruit of the Sprit, to show evidently that you have been filled with the Spirit of God.

To be filled with the Spirit of God, you have, first, to be a child of God. Be born again. This is the starting point (Jn. 3:3). The second step is to truly acknowledge your need and thirst for God’s Spirit. Seek for the spirit in prayer; those who seek finds (Matt. 7:7). There must be hunger for the infilling of the Spirit of God. Then, surrender totally to Christ’s Lordship. Clear the room in your heart of the illegal occupant, the devil, for the Holy Spirit cannot dwell together with devil. Never!

To be filled with the Spirit is not an option. Rather, it is a necessity in order to live a fulfilled and fruitful Christian life. The proof that you belong to Christ is having His Spirit (Rom. 8:14ff). And if His Spirit is in you, you would do what He would do, and refuse to do what He would not do. Having been filled with the Spirit, you must constantly be refilled by letting the Holy Spirit have more of you in all aspects of your life. Stay Spirit-filled, in Jesus’ name.

PRAYER POINTS

  1. Lord, fill and refill me with Your Spirit.
  2. Lord, help me to always remember and live by the understanding of the dangers of not being Spirit-filled.
  3. Lord, help our church ministers to be more focussed on building Spirit-filled, heaven-bound Christians/disciples in our churches.
