MEMORISE: And they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned asides to fables (2 Timothy 4:4)

EXPOSITION

Myths refer to stories from ancient times, especially ones that were told to explain natural events or describe the early history of people. The direct synonym is fallacy. Facts are realities backed up with evidences that are verifiable. The Holy Spirit wants to help us to learn about these two contrasts, especially as they relate to marriage.

Myth 1: “Marriage is a human institution. Monogamy was brought by the Western culture.” People who bank on this believe God has nothing to do with Marriage and that people can marry as many wives/ husbands as possible! However, we have biblical truth to counteract this in Genesis 2:21-25. God remains the sole proprietor of the marriage institution. When He created Adam, He did not create helpmeets, but a helpmeet from his rib, for him (Gen. 2:18). Monogamy is the truth while polygamy is a gross deviation.

Myth 2: “One can marry anybody or anything:” You see mothers marrying their sons, men marrying men, women doing likewise, and even humans marrying animals! Your marital choice should exclude homosexuality, lesbianism, incest, or bestiality, which are all condemned in God’s Word (Lev. 18:1ff; Rom. 1:27-28).  Practitioners risk eternal damnation.

Myth 3: Premature sex: This has become so rampant, as virginity and chastity are considered obsolete in so many quarters, most especially among the so-called elites. Some are mythic about this as yardstick for showing one’s partner real ‘love’. Hebrew 13:4 is there as the truth against this. Virginity is still a pride; keep it, and be rewarded for it.
