Topic: Never Say, It Can’t Work Here (1)

Read: Genesis 39:7-21

MEMORISE:
He is not greater in this house than I am; nor has he kept anything from me except you, for you are his wife. How then can I do this great evil and sin against God? (Genesis 39:9).

EXPOSITION
A lot of us fall into situations where we find ourselves having two or more different homes. Some people talk of home away from home. There are situations that cause one to be far away from home, i.e. place of birth. For instance, a person can become a sojourner in another man’s land due to situations beyond one’s control, just like in the case of Joseph who became a sojourner in Egypty, not because he planned for it, but because of his envious siblings that sold him off. Surprisingly, it has come to the practice of some of such people leaving away from their places of birth, precisely the Christians among them, to claim that some things in the Scripture, most especially, as it has to do with holiness and righteousness, cannot work in their setting. Let us learn from Joseph.

This boy of about 17 found himself in Egypt, a foreign land, by chance. His siblings sold him off as a slave to some Ishmaelities. It is not likely that his brothers would have thought that he would land in Egypt, but God has it that he ended up in the household of an Egyptian official-Potiphar (Gen.39v1).

This divinely favoured chap had a fair share of the challenges of life and faith, aside having been sold off to slavery-his master’s wife was sexually luring him to bed (vv.6,7). This boy refused to fall for whatever prank the devil was trying to play through the seductress. He didn’t say running away from sexual immorality couldn’t work in that foreign setting. To him, it was the same God that was in His father land and in the foreign land he was (v.9).

Are you claiming that what God’s holiness demands can’t work in that home away from home? Have you concluded that no one can work where you are now without taking bribe? Is it impossible to be a lecture/student and not be accused of sex for Mark? Do you say it is impossible to be on night duty as a married person without messing up? If the slave, Joseph still managed to stand for God’s holiness where he could have said, it won’t work, may God not let His lifestyle condemn us to hell. Amen isn’t enough; stop saying holiness can’t work in that foreign land.

PRAYER POINTS:
1. Lord, help me to overcome being unequally yoked with unbelievers.
2. I ask for forgiveness for, and disown every abominations I have brought into my life, home, and endeavours, in Jesus name.
3. Lord, deliever Your Church from Achans bringing forbidden things into it.
